She Really Milks: A Problem… Or An Opportunity?

It’s time to dry cow #374, a Supershot daughter that’s still milking 88lb (40kg). But, it feels wrong. Why? For generations, we have carefully coordinated the breeding program to enhance her ability to give loads of milk. She has been carefully raised to be healthy, from calfhood to freshening. Her ration during this lactation is designed to push her to maximum genetic potential expression of milk. She’s been bred and fed to milk... then we try to tell her STOP. This is tough. Tough on #374’s routines. Tough on the herdsman. Tough on her in-utero calf. Is there a way around this?
