In the 1990s, the number of representatives of the Dutch Belted breed world-wide turned out to have dropped below 500. For Ronald (Ron) Pietersma – an American with Dutch roots – this was the immediate reason to take action, to save the breed from further ruin. At his Legend Dairy Farms in the American state of California, he built up, via two different strategies, an impressive Dutch Belted herd, which now consists of nearly 2000 animals.
