Holstein of the week: Raunhøj Commander 3599

‘We used Larcrest Commander early on already, as a young DNA sire. And we are pleased that we did so, because later on it became difficult for ABS to bring more semen to Denmark. We are now milking about eleven outstanding Commander daughters.’ Speaking is Christian Therkildsen from the Danish farm Raunhøj Holsteins (400 milking and dry cows), where just last week his seventh lactation Commander daughter Raunhøj 3599 classified EX-91. ‘An exceptional cow, who last year produced about 14,000 kg/30,800 lb 4.0% 3.3%.’ And is also a splendid brood cow, as she already has an EX-93 Denver daughter.

Colombian lifetime production (1)

Last week, Asociacion Holstein Colombia released its list of the highest, active lifetime producers. Leading the list is the tenth lactation La Rinconada Damion Porta with 124,580 kg/274,076 lb in 3888 days; good for 32 kg/70 lb milk/day. Damion daughter Porta is owned by La Rinconada and also scores EX-93.

Colombian lifetime production (2)

Colombia’s top-8 list of active lifetime producers includes no less than three cows with the La Rinconada prefix; besides Porta, we find a Blitz and a Bradnick daughter. One of them (the Blitz daughter) is owned by the El Triunfo herd in the Boyaca department, which also has three homebred Triunfo animals in the top-8: daughters of Roy (2) and Atwood.

Select top-3

The top-3 sires with the most registered calves in the US during a recent two-week span consists entirely of Select Sires bulls. Nr.1 (with a strong lead; 256 calves) is S-S-I Sundance, an Earlybird son with 3190 gTPI from the Delicious family, followed by Siemers Hulu-RC (<Wolfgang; 2849 gTPI) and Matcrest Sundown (<Frost Bite; 3027).

Brain

Last year he was still one of the top-10 most used sires, but unfortunately he recently had to be culled: the five-year-old Himeyers Brain (1448 ISET). Together with his sire Vogue Letsgo he occupies the top-2 of the Swiss progeny proven ISET list. Brain originates from the well-known Swiss cow family of Theiro Blackstar Belinda.

Photo Shake It

Focus: Shake It

Recently launched: the young bull Jacobs Shake It, a son of the two-time Madison winner Erbacres Snapple Shakira EX-97. Shake It was bred by Ferme Jacobs, is owned by the new AI company Showbox Sires, and is being distributed by Semex. Shake It is a son of the Delta-Lambda son Havenofear and combines 3335 gLPI with a high +12 conformation (Canadian base). On the American base he scores 2614 gTPI and +3.00 gPTAT. Interesting is that Shakira’s older son Showtime-RC is already performing well. With Shake It (A2A2), Shakira is offering the breed even more opportunities!
