Dewgood Holsteins: Decades of Breeding Provides Elite Productions with Jersey-like Components
While some farms around Oconto in Wisconsin currently milk thousands of cows, Dean and Wanda Good continue to manage 70 Holsteins along with the accompanying young stock. The highest profitability per cow is the economic goal at Dewgood Holsteins. The reason why for decades already they have bred for high productions and high components. So that on some days, they ship Jersey-like milk. Results that Dean Good could not even have dreamed of as a young breeder.

Fertility Traits: Different in Each Country but they are Producing Positive Gains
From the 60s through to the early 2,000s, cow production increased enormously though the fertility of the Holstein cow declined alarmingly. 20 years ago, selection for fertility traits was established, and with the assistance of genomics, has started to reverse that downward trend in fertility. Here we look at the fertility traits that are evaluated in some of the main Holstein countries. Read more >

Everyone Wants to Milk the (Very) Long-lasting Cows from Saetteli Holsteins
Dominik Saetteli himself milks about 60-70 Holsteins. ‘That depends on the intensity of sales. Annually we sell more than 40 milking cows. If demand is high, then we ourselves drop down to about 60 milking cows,’ explains the friendly Swiss breeder, who for many years already has sold his cows directly to other farmers, without sales or an agent. How could Saetteli build up this business? ‘That is long-term work, and depends on reliable cows that milk and last a long time,’ says Saetteli. One cow has developed into an icon of longevity for the farm: Saetteli Shottle Heaven. She became no less than sixteen years old, scored VG-89, and produced >151,000 kg/332,200 lb. Here is the fascinating story of a (high) longevity herd in Switzerland.
